At present, electricity department sends employees every month to take meter reading, which is an expensive and time-consuming job. Thus, this project provides a convenient and efficient method to avoid this problem.
The proposed system uses a microcontroller of the 8051 family and a rectified-power supply. In this system, a GSM modem is connected to the microcontroller through a level shifter IC for communication. The relays are controlled by a relay drive IC for switching the loads. The status is displayed on a LCD display which is interfaced to the microcontroller.
This system is connected to an energy meter with a load through opto-coupler IC. The microcontroller reads the pulses from the energy meter to find the energy consumption of the electrical loads. If users want to know the reading information, they can call the GSM modem number to get the reading information by SMS. This GSM modem can also receive the commands form the user phone to control the electrical loads.
This project in future can be implemented to interface with a non-volatile memory IC like EEPROM along with a keypad so that a user can change the mobile number as per the requirement.
