The project is designed to develop an urban traffic signal ,based on traffic density and also with a remote override facility. During normal timings, the signal timing changes automatically by sensing the traffic density at a junction.

The movement of any approaching emergency vehicle like ambulance, fire brigade, etc would  have RF remote control that would override the set timing prompting instantaneous green signal in the desired direction, while blocking the other lanes by red signal for some time.

Conventional traffic light system is based on fixed time concept allotted to each side of the junction which cannot be varied as per the varying traffic density. The proposed system uses a microcontroller of the 8051 family duly interfaced with the sensors that changes the junction timing automatically to accommodate the movement of vehicles smoothly avoiding unnecessary waiting time at the junction.

The sensors used in this project are IR and photodiodes, which are in line of sight configuration across the roads to detect density at the traffic signal. The density of vehicles is measured in three zones: low, medium, and high based on which timings are allotted accordingly. Override feature is activated by an on board RF receiver operated by the transmitter from the emergency vehicle.

Furthermore, this project can be enhanced by synchronizing all the traffic junctions in the city by establishing a wired or wireless network among them. This synchronization will greatly help in reducing traffic congestion.
