PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project is intended to develop a circuit to control a load automatically with a fixed temperature limit by using a thermistor sensor. Whenever the temperature increases beyond a certain limit,  a lamp (indicated as cooler here) is switched on to bring the temperature to a normal value. Due to  automatic switching on of the load, this system doesn’t require human involvement for monitoring the temperature of the load.

A negative co-efficient thermistor is used along with an operational amplifier to actuate the relay in the event of the temperature going out of range. Thermistor is often used rather than other temperature sensors because they are cost effective.

But most of their resistance-versus-temperature characteristics are highly nonlinear and need correction for applications that require a linear response. A change in temperature will alter the input parameters to the op-amp. The op-amp delivers an output to energize the relay and switch on/off the lamp through its contacts.

This project in future  can be enhanced by using a digital temperature sensor instead of an analog one. By doing so, we can increase the accuracy of the temperature control system.

Q:  What is the concept of this project?
A:  The concept is to switch on the load at zero crossing point using opto coupler and thyristor. The signals can be observed on any Digital Storage Oscilloscope.
Q:  Can I replace lamp with any load?
A:  Yes, any electrical load up to 200W can be used.
Q:  What is the formula for calculating smoothing capacitor value?
A:  There is some approximated formula .Peak to peak ripple voltage = Load current in amps / (2*line frequency in hertz *capacitance in farads). But as rule of thumb for 1 A current 1000uF is best. Thus it is load dependent.
Q:  What is the objective of this project?
A:  The objective is to understand the application of a low cost temperature sensor like a Thermistor.
