PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Stroboscopic lighting effects for discotheques in pubs are usually achieved using conventional white LEDs, in place of discharge lamps, for higher efficiency at lower cost. This type of low duty cycle PWM control for higher intensity is possible by instantly switching the LEDs on for shortest possible time period at much higher voltages than the LED voltage rating. This kind of swift intensity control from full glow to full off helps in developing stroboscopic effect, which is generally used in disco dance floors.

A programmable microcontroller from  8051 family is engaged to provide such effects, the output  of which is driven by a MOSFET  switch for a cluster of LEDs. The controller, according to the program, generates on/off commands at higher rate, thus giving the effects of stroboscopic lights.

As the controller output gives only 5v, it is not possible for MOSFET to be reliably switched on at that voltage ,so an interfacing transistor is used in between controller output and MOSFET for driving purposes.

Power supply consists of step-down transformer 230/12V, which steps down voltage to 12V AC. This is converted to DC using bridge rectifier and ripples are removed using capacitive filter and it is then regulated to +5V using a voltage regulator 7805, which is required for the operation of microcontroller and other components.
