PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project is designed to develop a dynamic time-based city traffic signal system using PIC microcontroller. The signal timing changes automatically by sensing the traffic density at the junction.

Traditionally the Junction timings allotted are fixed in conventional traffic signal systems. Sometimes higher traffic density at one side of the junction demands longer green time as compared to standard allotted time.

The proposed system uses a microcontroller of the PIC16F8 series duly interfaced with sensors that change the junction timing automatically to accommodate the movement of vehicles smoothly by avoiding unnecessary waiting time at the junctions.

Sensors in this project are IR and photodiodes which are in line of sight configuration across the loads to detect the density at traffic signal while interrupted. The density of the vehicles is measured in three zones: low, medium  and high based on which the timings are allotted accordingly.

Furthermore, the project can be enhanced by synchronizing all traffic junctions in the city by establishing a wired or wireless network among them. This synchronization will greatly help in reducing the traffic congestion.
