PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A dual converter is a power electronics control system to get either polarity DC to a load from AC rectification by forward converter and reverse converter. It can run DC motors in either directions with speed control as well.

This single-phase converter is achieved by using a pair of SCR controlled bridge (4 SCRs X 2) that enables DC motor to get reverse polarity for either direction rotation. The speed is also lowered in steps by the microcontroller triggering each bridge SCR bank , duly interfaced through opto-isolators.

 A pair of switches is used to input logical signal for desired output. If the input of 230 volt AC is given to a dual SCR bridge, we can have 100 watt lamp load and the DC polarity across the lamp is checked. Or, a low power DC motor of 220 volt can be used. As a demo our project uses 12 volt AC at input and 12 volt DC motor to verify either direction rotation as the polarity gets reversed.

 The power supply consists of a step-down transformer 230/12V, which steps down the voltage to 12V AC. This is converted to a DC using a bridge rectifier. Ripples are removed using capacitive filter and, it is then regulated to +5V using voltage regulator 7805, which is required for the operation of the microcontroller and other components.

Q:  Which microcontroller is used in this project?
A:  The microcontroller used in this project is a 40 pin IC from 8051 family.
Q:  What is dual converter?
A:  Dual converter is a power electronics control system to get either polarity DC from AC rectification by forward converter and reverse converter using 2 full bridge SCR's.
Q:  What is the formula for calculating smoothing capacitor value?
A:  There is some approximated formula .Peak to peak ripple voltage = Load current in amps / (2*line frequency in hertz *capacitance in farads). But as rule of thumb for 1 A current 1000uF is best. Thus it is load dependent.

I am really happy for your service.I got my kit in 4 days with all components.The visual (Assembly procedure) DVD is ok. But there is some problem with the 2nd DVD which contains soft copies & documents shows blank.
It will be very helpful for our project if you can replace the the DVD .
