The project is designed for automatic door opening system using PIR sensor. This project facilitates opening and closing of doors automatically by sensing human body temperature near the doors, especially in places like shopping malls, hotels and theatres wherein many incoming and outgoing visitors pass through the doors frequently.

This is achieved with the help of a PIR (Passive Infrared) sensor. A live body generally emits infrared energy which is sensed by the PIR sensor from a considerable distance. This sensing signal is fed to the microcontroller of the 8051 family to operate a door motor through a motor-driver IC.  When any human being approaches within the operating range of the sensor, it sends a logical command to open the door.

The door automatically closes within the fixed time delay if it detects no further movement within the PIR operating range. Interrupt signals are used through limit switches to avoid a locked-rotor condition of the motor.

Furthermore, this project can be enhanced by interfacing a counting arrangement to keep a record of entry and exit of people at a particular place. This can be achieved by interfacing the system with the EEPROM (non-volatile memory) to avoid loss of stored data even if the power fails.
