PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The aim of this project is to design a medication reminder using a PIC microcontroller that helps reminding a patient to take his/her medicine at the prescribed time. The proposed system is best suited for elderly people and people who are very busy, as this device not only reminds them of their medicines with a buzzing sound, but also displays the name of the medicine to be taken at that time.

A patient can store the respective time of a particular medicine through a matrix keypad. Based on an RTC (Real Time Clock) interfaced to the microcontroller, the programmed time for the medicine is displayed on the LCD along with a buzzing sound to alert the patient about taking appropriate medicine. The microcontroller used in this project is of PIC16F8 family and the RTC maintains an accurate time as it is supported by the crystal.

This project in future can be enhanced by integrating it with GSM technology, so that a patient receives a reminder about the medicine he has to take via SMS on his/her cell phone. Also a provision to change the name of the medicine can be incorporated by interfacing this device with a PC or EEPROM (non-volatile memory).

Q & A
Q:  Can the user feed the medicine name?
A:  No, because the name of medicine is already stored in the program.
Q:  Is a buzzer or some alert provided as reminder for medicine to be taken on time?
A:  Yes, a buzzer is provided to give the alert signal as reminder.
Q:  How to set the time?
A:  A numeric keypad is provided to set the time.
Q:  What is RTC?
A:  RTC stands for Real Time Clock. It provides time and date reference along with memory back up.
