PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The main aim of this project is to develop a low-voltage and high-voltage trip switch mechanism to protect load from voltage fluctuations beyond the acceptable limits in industrial and domestic AC mains supply system.

 This proposed system will trip the load in the event of input voltage falling below / above a set value. Two comparators are used as window comparator formed out of one quad comparator IC. This delivers an error output if the input voltage to them crosses the range beyond voltage window.

A relay is then operated to cutoff the load for safety reason. A lamp is used as load in this project. It is extended by integrating an alarm, which sounds when the tripping takes place.

This system can also be enhanced in future by interfacing it with a GSM modem to convey alert  message to the user via SMS to take appropriate action.

Q:  What is the formula for calculating smoothing capacitor value?
A:  There is some approximated formula .Peak to peak ripple voltage = Load current in amps / (2*line frequency in hertz *capacitance in farads). But as rule of thumb for 1 A current 1000uF is best. Thus it is load dependent.
Q:  What to do when the lamp fails and what is the maximum lamp rating that can be used?
A:  If the lamp fails one can use any lamp or bulb which is used in homes up to 100W. We suggest you to go for low watt bulbs.
