PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A desired number is entered from a keypad interfaced to the microcontroller of the 8051 family. Upon activation, the system starts counting down ie, one in each second until the set of number reaches zero. A Relay switches the load on & off for every count thus can be used for testing the switching life cycle of the product.

The working life of many products such as lamps depend on the number of on/off cycles they encounter. This project is designed to be used in industries for testing the life cycles of such electrical loads (lamps, motors etc) using down counter.

7-segment displays are used for displaying number/count. Once the circuit is powered, the counter is set using keypad to count down anywhere from 999 to 1. Counter starts decrementing from the set number to 0, and simultaneously making the load (i.e. bulb in this circuit) turn on and off on every count using a relay. On reaching the zero count, it finally remains off.

This project can be further enhanced by using mono-stable triggering device to stop the counter in the event of failure of the load before reaching zero. Thus, exact switching life cycle of any load can be estimated.
