PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The objective of this project is to synchronize traffic lights for designing an intelligent traffic-management system using multiple microcontrollers communicating with each other via serial communication mode.

Three microcontrollers are used to synchronize traffic lights at three junctions as a model. Each microcontroller is responsible for one particular junction. If vehicles are assumed to travel at a particular speed, then the traffic signals change in such a way, that majority of times the vehicle gets green signal all through three junctions.

The major advantage of adopting this technology is that there is no need for any centralized body to monitor the direction of the traffic flow. As human involvement is negligible, there is a very little scope of human error.

Hence, this approach is boon for the government and local authorities facing financial constraints as they can’t spend money on costly cameras and software.

This kind of technology is also used in modern automobiles wherein multiple microcontrollers are used in a  network to adapt to modular approach. Therefore while the number of microcontrollers increase, the communication between them becomes essential for collective decision.

For communication among themselves, a serial communication is preferred and a lot of serial buses and protocols are developed optimizing different parameters of  communication.

Q:  Which microcontroller is used in this project?
A:  The microcontroller used in this project is a 40 pin IC from 8051 family.
Q:  What is the application of CAN system?
A:  CAN(Control Area Network) system is used for multiplenumbers of networked controllers as in Automobile applications.
Q:  Is Data transferring possible?
A:  No, data transfer is not possible using this project.
Q:  What is the formula for calculating smoothing capacitor value?
A:  There is some approximated formula .Peak to peak ripple voltage = Load current in amps / (2*line frequency in hertz *capacitance in farads). But as rule of thumb for 1 A current 1000uF is best. Thus it is load dependent.
