PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The main aim of this project is to control the speed of an induction motor by applying varying voltages to the motor by using  thyristors so that its speed can be controlled.

The project uses zero crossing point of the waveform which is detected by a comparator whose output is then fed to the microcontroller. The microcontroller provides required delayed triggering control to a pair of SCRs through opto isolator interface. Finally the power is applied to the load through anti parallel SCRs in series.

This project uses a microcontroller from 8051 family which is interfaced through a push-button switch for increasing or decreasing the AC power to the load. A lamp is used in place of an induction motor ( not supplied) for demo purposes in the kit whose varying intensity demonstrates the varying power to the motor. The varying power shall result in variation in the speed of the motor while the lamp is replaced by the motor.

The project can be further enhanced by using 2 such units in any 3 phase supply for 3 phase induction motor.

A:  The microcontroller used in this project is a 40 pin IC from 8051 family.
Q:  Can I place motor instead of lamp?
A:  Yes up to ¼HP 230V AC motor can be used
Q:  What is the thyristor used?
A:  TRIAC BT136 is used as the thyristor.
Q:  How is the bulb intensity varied?
A:  The bulb intensity can be varied by delaying the firing angle of Thyristor, so as to control its triggering.
