PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The main goal of this project is to control speed of a fan using a standard TV remote with thyristor power control method.

A standard TV remote sends coded infrared data to a control board, which is then received by an IR sensor (at the receiver end) interfaced to a microcontroller of the 8051 family. Every time , a button is pressed on the remote, the system sends a specific coded data in infrared range. This coded data is executed by the microcontroller to deliver delayed firing pulses to thyristor through an optical isolation device.

Power to the load connected in series with the thyristor is thus controlled based on the received signal. Also, the firing angle is displayed on a 7-segment display. A lamp load is provided in place of a fan whose varying intensity demonstrates the varying power to the fan  for speed control.The lamp is provided in place of the fan for demonstration purpose only.

Furthermore, this project can be enhanced by adding more outputs from the microcontroller feeding relay drivers to switch on/off domestic loads together with the speed control of the fan.

Q:  Why TRIAC is preferred instead of relays?
A:  TRIAC is a solid state device compared to a relay which is a electromagnetic device with contact pitting problem
