This project is designed to monitor  number of persons entering and exiting a room for electrical loads to get switched on as the first person enters and to get switched off while the last person leaves. In this system, IR sensors are used in combination with a microcontroller to monitor all the operations. This helps in saving lot of energy.

There are two pairs of sensors, each pair being kept apart at a certain distance from the other. One pair of sensors consisting of a transmitter and receiver is kept exactly opposite to the other.

The transmitting part emits modulated IR light which is received at the receiver end and is then fed to the microcontroller of the 8051 family. When the first person enters the room, the microcontroller senses it (with the help of IR sensors) and increments the count. It also displays that on a 7-segment display and also switches on a lamp load that remains on for subscquent entry of persons.

In the same way, while any person exits the room, the count gets decremented. Eventually, when the last person exits from the room, the lamp is switched off. The load operation is handled by a relay interfaced to the microcontroller.

Furthermore, this project can be enhanced by using timer arrangement in the project so that if the load switching doesn’t take place for some reason as desired, then the timer will complete the task after a prefixed time.
