PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The main objective of this project is to controla BLDC motor in electric vehicles to make it run exactly at the preset speed as saved in EEPROM (non volatile memory).An effective speed control of BLDC motor is very essential for various industrial applicationssuch as drilling, lathes, spinning, electric vehicles, elevators, etc.

This proposed system provides a very precise and effective control systemthat facilitates the user toenter a desired speed (predefined or preset speed),which is stored in an EEPROM for the motor to run at that speed. If power supply is turned off,thenthe EEPROMretains thelast speed entered. And while the supply is resumed, the motor will run at the last entered speed.

BLDC motor speed can be controlled using PWM principle. This is achieved by keeping theBLDC motor on closed loop feedback and giving an RPM reference tothe motor by a shaft mounted sensing arrangement with IR reflection, which is fed to the microcontroller in the circuit. A display unit displays the full speed and one can enter the desired percentage with the help ofswitches to vary the speed.

The pulse width would be automatically adjusted to maintain the DC power to motor such that the entered speed percentage matches thepresentRPM. The above operation is carried out by using one opto-isolator and MOSFET for driving the BLDC motor. The  IR sensing is used for getting the speed reference to themicrocontroller.

EEPROM is interfaced tothemicrocontroller.The EEPROM being a non-volatilememory, stores the speed reference to feed the control circuit, which forces the motor to always run at thesame speed. Two switches are used as input to MC for increasing or decreasing the speed of theBLDC motor.

A:  The microcontroller used in this project is a 40 pin IC from 8051 family.
Q:  How does the sensing take place?
A:  Sensing takes place by using IR sensor reflection arrangement.
Q:  Can I use bigger stepper/ induction motor to sense the speed?
A:  Yes any motor with reflecting surface from shaft can be used.
Q:  What is the role of EEPROM?
A:  EEPROM is used for data restoration or backup even after power interruption.
