The aim of this project is to develop a device to detect the speed limit on highways and to alert traffic authorities in case of any speed limit violation.

 The proposed system checksrash driving by calculating the speed of the vehicleusing the time taken to travel between two set points at fixed distance. Each set point consists of apair of sensorscomprising an IR transmitter and IR receiver – each pair installed on either side of the road.Two sets of speed limit are set by the police with 2 switches who use the system depending upon the traffic at aparticular location.

Time taken by a vehicle to travel from one set point to the other is calculated by themicrocontroller program.Based on the time set in the program, the system calculates the speedof the vehicleand displays iton aLCD.Moreover, if the vehiclecrosses the speed limit,a buzzingsound alerts the police.

This concept can be extended in futureby integrating a camera with the system which could capturethe image of thevehicle'snumber plate andsendsitto thetraffic authorities.

Q:  How can one increase the sensing distance?
A:  By using IR-reflecting sensors in place of interruption type used, one can increase the sensing distance.
Q:  Which microcontroller is used in this project?
A:  The microcontroller used in this project is a 40 pin IC from 8051 family.
