With an Assembled & Tested PCB

DIY kit comes with an Assembled and Tested PCB ensuring 100% output guarantee. Includes hardware for assembling project from scratch. Fully supported by elaborate documentation, audio visuals and tools to independently carry out the project work.

The project is designed to control  speed of a single-phase induction motor in three steps using SCR-based, single-phase, cyclo-converter technique. A.C. motors have great advantages of being relatively inexpensive and very reliable. The induction motors in particular are very robust.

Therefore they are used in many domestic appliances such as washing machines, vacuum cleaners, water pumps, and in industries as well. Induction motor is known as constant-speed machine. The difficulty of varying its speed by a cost effective device is one of its main disadvantage.

As AC supply frequency cannot be changed, so this project uses a thyristor controlled cyclo converter which enables control of speed in steps for an induction motor. The microcontroller used in this project is from the 8051 family.

A pair of slide switches are provided to select  desired speed range (F, F/2 and F/3) of operation of induction motor. These switches are interfaced to the microcontroller. The status of switches enables the microcontroller to deliver pulses that trigger a set of SCRs in dual bridge. Thus, the speed control of induction motor can be achieved in three steps i.e. (F, F/2 and F/3).

This very concept can be further enhanced and implemented to control the speed of a three phase induction motor. It can also be coupled with a firing angle control for achieving any desired speed.

Note: An induction motor is used to observe the output of the project. Motor is not supplied along with the kit. However, it can be purchased on extra cost.

Q & A
Q:  Which microcontroller is used in this project?
A:  The microcontroller used in this project is a 40 pin IC from 8051 family.
Q:  What is a Cyclo-converter?
A:  Cyclo-converter converts a constant voltage, constant frequency AC waveform to another AC waveform of a lower frequency by synthesizing the output waveform from segments of the AC supply without an intermediate DC link
Q:  What is the rating of Induction motor used?
A:  230V, 1500RPM, ¼HP rated induction motor is used.
Q:  How can the speed be reduced?
A:  By operation modes in F(Fundamental frequency), F/2 and F/3, speed can be reduced.
