Bluetooth, the curiously named communication standard has taken the world by storm. Now a given feature on everything from smartphones to in-vehicle entertainment systems, Bluetooth has an interesting history and working, proving how versatile this communication standard is. It is managed by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), a non-profit, non stock company which mainly deals with setting standards, licensing and advancing Bluetooth capabilities. Before this it was standardized by the IEEE as IEEE 802.15.1, but since the SIG, that convention is not used. Here’s more about how the wireless communication standard came to be, why it is named so, how it has grown over the years and where it is used! [Read more…]
When you think about some of the most pressing issues the world is facing, global warming and pollution definitely come to mind. With the ever increasing number of cars, trucks, motorbikes and whatnot that still run on fossil fuels, our environment isn’t getting healthier, specially in some of the larger cities. In fact, a few cities have gotten so polluted by exhaust fumes and the like that stars in the night sky aren’t visible properly. Speaking of which, Beijing is considered one of the most polluted cities in the world. It is often covered in dense smog caused by industrial and automobile exhaust smoke, to the extent that citizens are asked to wear face masks. If that’s doesn’t sound bad enough, there are large television screens around the city that show a virtual sunrise at appropriate times because the natural sunrise isn’t visible through the smog!
LabVIEW is a programming environment and system design tool for a visual programming language, developed by American company National Instruments. If you’re an electronics, electrical or instrumentation engineer, or a budding one, LabVIEW should definitely be on your radar, if it already isn’t, that is. This powerful platform is used worldwide in hundreds of fields, and the amount of scope for a LabVIEW programmer is nothing short of enormous. Interested? Read on to find out more about LabVIEW! Advancements in Intelligent Instrumentation and Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) / Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) have made the process-control solutions in many of the industries to be easily managed and operated by utilizing the benefits of a SCADA system. SCADA is popular in several applications like process industries, oil and gas, electric power generation, distribution and utilities, water and waste control, agriculture/irrigation, manufacturing, transportation systems, and so on. Let us know about the SCADA system‘s working principle in brief from this article. [Read more…]
When you think of projectors, the first thing that comes to mind are large, ungainly boxes and a bunch of cables. That’s not always true though. While larger projectors obviously have better quality outputs, there are pico projectors that can sometimes match or even exceed full size projector quality. So what are pico projectors exactly? They’re simply miniature projectors, either embedded with another handheld device, or just by themselves. Also called pocket projectors, mobile projectors or handheld projectors, these devices were developed as a result of the miniaturization of all devices. Here’s all you need to know about pico projectors! [Read more…]
Embedded systems is one of the most important, yet overlooked subjects in the electronics world. When you think technology, mobile phones, tablets and laptops come to mind, but the devices that actually help us in our daily lives are not talked too much about. They’re often confused with larger or more general purpose computers, and it’s sometimes difficult to discern between one and the other. However, once you understand what embedded systems are used for, and for that matter defined as, it’s pretty easy to see what is used where. Here’s all you need to know about embedded systems, its history, types, characteristics and more! [Read more…]
Before we dive into what Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) are, it’s important to understand what hybrid vehicles are. Any vehicle that has two or more distinct power sources can be called a hybrid vehicle. So technically, vehicles which use both petrol/diesel and CNG can also be termed hybrids, although we tend to use the term to define more eco-friendly transportation. So what are Hybrid Electric Vehicles? These are vehicles that combine a usual internal combustion engine as well as an electric propulsion system. [Read more…]
Virtual Reality, also known as immersive multimedia, is an artificially created environment used for a variety of purposes, entertainment or otherwise. It basically simulates one’s presence in real or imagined worlds, often simulating sights and sounds, but sometimes also touch, smell and more. Although most prefer the term ‘virtual environment’, both are interchangeably used. There are basically two general rules when it comes to virtual reality, rather two requirements before anything can be termed a virtual reality. [Read more…]
Lenticular lenses are an innovation that are simple in principle, but used in complex applications. It is basically an array of magnifying lenses, arranged in such a way that depending on the angle you view it, different images are magnified.Remember those interesting posters or pictures that seemed to create a 3D effect or changed when you moved around? Those used a technology called lenticular printing, which in turn use lenticular lenses to produce an illusion of depth or multiple images.
As we know that Zigbee technology is the most popular standard for home automation and short range wireless personal area networks (WPAN’s), similarly Android is the widespread tablet and smart phone technology. Enabling Zigbee and Android technologies in one platform, we can exploit an efficient control system than using individual technology. Thus, this article is intended to give a brief idea of interfacing Zigbee communication to the Android control application based real time projects.
