PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project is designed to control the speed of an induction motor such as a fan using an Android-based smart phone. In home automation-related applications, the convenience of remotely controlling the speed of a fan can be achieved.

The remote operation is achieved by any smart-phone or Tablet with an Android OS and a GUI (Graphical User Interface) based touchscreen operation. The Android mobile or any mobile device acts as a transmitter through Bluetooth; the transmitted data is then received by a Bluetooth receiver (at receiver end) interfaced to the microcontroller of the 8051 family.

Each time the data sent by the android application, as per the written code, is executed by the microcontroller to deliver delayed firing pulses to the thyristor through an optical isolation. The Power to the load, connected in series with the thyristor, is controlled based on the received signal. Also, the firing angle is displayed on a 7-segment display.  A lamp load, whose varying intensity demonstrates the varying power to the motor for speed control, is provided in the place of the motor.

Furthermore, this project can be enhanced by adding more outputs from the microcontroller feeding relay drivers to switch on and off the domestic loads together with the speed control of the fan.
