This project is intended to control a single-phase A.C. induction motor using a new method of speed-control technique. It presents a design of a low-cost high-efficiency drive capable of supplying a single-phase A.C. induction motor with a PWM modulated sinusoidal voltage. The circuit operation is controlled by the microcontroller of the 8051 family.

The device is aimed at substituting commonly used TRIAC phase angle control drives. This circuit is capable of supplying single-phase A.C. induction motor (or general A.C. inductive/resistive load) with varying A.C. voltage.

The same as in the TRIAC control, the voltage applied to the load can be varied from zero to maximum value. On the other hand, it uses a pulse width modulation technique (PWM), and when compared to the phase-angle control used for TRIACS, it produces much lower high order harmonics.

Thus, it suits EMC/EMI regulations much better. Because the circuit is aimed at low-cost, low/medium-power applications, it does not use a conventional converter topology to produce output voltage waveform. It directly modulates the mains A.C. voltage.

Compared to costly converter, it requires lower number of active and passive power components. In summary, a device attempted here takes advantage of both low price of the phase-angle control and low harmonic content and high efficiency that we can get with standard converter topology.

The drive uses PWM controlled MOSFET and load in series with bridge rectifier. This drive based on this new control technique is targeted for use in consumer and industrial products: washing machine, dishwashers, ventilators, compressors, and wherever system cost is a consideration.

The input terminals of the rectifying bridge are connected in series to the load. The output terminal (rectified side) has a power transistor (IGBT, MOSFET or bipolar) connected across them. When the power transistor is off, the current cannot flow through rectifying bridge and load which is in series remains in off-state.

When the power transistor is on, the bridge output terminals are short-circuited, and then, the current can flow through the rectifying bridge and thus through load. Thus, by changing the duty cycle of the PWM pulses to the power switch ,the power to load is controlled. Special care is taken in circuit such that PWM pulses are synchronized with supply phase by zero voltage sensing points.

Q & A
Q:  Which microcontroller is used in this project?
A:  The microcontroller used in this project is a 40 pin IC from 8051 family.
Q:  Can I place motor instead of lamp?
A:  Yes up to ¼HP 230V AC motor can be used
Q:  What is ACPWM control?
A:  It presents a design of a low-cost, high-efficiency drive capable of supplying a single-phase AC induction motor with a PWM modulated sinusoidal voltage by chopping the AC wave form.
Q:  Can the input voltage variation to 168 be provided by any circuit without a variac?
A:  Add our model 344 at the input to 168 link for getting variable HV DC at the output.

I am working in a company named Ansys and we deal with power simulation based projects like space vector modulator. so while browsing I go to know about Edgefx. For the Collaboration I take the kit from Edgfx. Yes it is perfect and working properly even.Through online I got this kit.
